A winch is a spooling winch device that is used to wind a cable or rope in and out. The resulting tension can lift a heavy object. A hoist is used to raise or lower a load. It is typically fitted with wire rope or chain. Generally, the hoist is directly mounted to the crane girder or on a trolley for the lifting job.
Some winches can be specially designed and fabricated to work as a hoist. In such case, the winch must have a locking brake and no free-spool mechanism. In addition, it should be clearly stated by the manufacturer that the winch can be approved to use as a hoist.
