Choosing The Correct Winch Line

There are two main factors determining the winch rope capacity, length and diameter. In the selection of winch line, you need to consider how often it will be used and what kind of load it needs to handle.

Length

Before specifying the rope length, you need to know that the greatest pulling power occurs in the first wrap of the drum, thus the pulling power decreases with each additional drum wrap. The length of rope is largely determined by the designed load capacity.

Diameter

The rope diameter comes down to the strength of the winch line. The strength mainly includes breaking strength, test strength and safety strength, among which the safe strength is the maximum strength allowed. Generally, the safety factory of the rope is 6-8.

The diameter of winch line can be increased for additional strength, but keep in mind that the rope length has to decrease with winch line diameter increasing so as to fit on the drum.

How Does An Electric Wire Rope Winch Work?

The winch is engineered to lift or pull a heavy load by using a rope spooled on a rotating drum. During winching operation, the drum will be driven to rotate, thus winding a rope in and out. The resulting tension will lead the winch to lift or pull a load. A push-button control box or remote control (pendant control and wireless remote control) can be used to control and change the direction of drum rotation.

For safe winching operations, the winch can be outfitted with a variety of safety equipment, such as drum guard, overload limiter, limit switches and emergency stop.

A manual band brake is optional for your winch. It is an extra brake fitted on the drum. The common use is for anchor or mooring winches in marine environments.

Clutch is designed for pulling winches only. It is operated by a manual lever, and allows the operator to manually disengage the spooling drum from the gear train, thus enabling the drum to rotate freely. Depending on the size of the winch, a claw or multi pin clutch is used.
