Boat windlass is used to retrieve and release anchors and chains. The windlass is usually installed on the main deck of the ship’s fore and aft. The warping head on both sides can be used for line handling. The anchor windlass can be designed with single gypsy wheel and double gypsy wheel depending on your requirement. If you are looking to purchase a new windlass for boat, Aicrane is here to help you select a suitable and economical one.
Two Main Types of Boat Windlass for Sale
According to the power source, the windlass can be divided into electric windlass and hydraulic windlass.
Electric windlass for boats
The electric boat windlass is the most widely used type on ships.
It is powered by an electric motor, which drives the main shaft to rotate after multi-stage deceleration through large and small gears in the reduction box. Due to the high speed reduction ratio requirements, the speed reduction mechanism is relatively large.
Electric windlass is mainly used for small and medium-sized ships, with anchor chain diameter of 16mm-93mm.
Model | Electric Boat Anchor Windlass |
Dia of anchor chain/rope | ø12mm – ø128mm |
No. of gypsy | Single or double |
Load capacity | 1 ton- 100 ton |
Speed | 9-11 m/min |
Certificate | BV, ABS, DNV, RMRS, etc |
Hydraulic boat windlass
Hydraulic windlass mainly relies on hydraulic devices to perform and control actions, which is also called electric hydraulic windlass because its hydraulic energy comes from the oil pump device driven by the motor.
This windlass has compact structure, small transmission parts, smooth operation, and good shifting performance. However, it requires more maintenance care than the electric type.
The hydraulic windlass widely used for modern large and medium-sized ships, with anchor chain diameters of 16mm-120mm.
Model | Hydraulic Boat Windlass |
Dia of anchor chain/rope | ø12mm – ø128mm |
Speed | 9-11 m/min |
Load capacity | 1 ton- 100 ton |
Certificate | BV, ABS, DNV, RMRS, etc |

Basic Components of Marine Windlass
The windlass is mainly composed of base, bracket, anchor sprocket, brake, gypsy wheel, gearbox, electronic control system, etc. The electric windlass has electric motor, and hydraulic windlass has hydraulic pump station.
The main technical indicators of the windlass include the diameter of the anchor chain, the nominal speed of the windlass winch, the rated load, the supporting load, several levels of speed change, the electric system, etc.
The installation of the windlass on the ship must ensure that the angle between the anchor chain and the gypsy wheel is 117-120 degrees.
Buy The Right Windlass For Your Boat
In order to select a suitable windlass for your boat, there are a few things you will need to consider, including:
- The chain diameter, length and strength level
- The weight of the anchor
- Support loads
- Anchor depth
- Working speed (single speed, double speed or triple speed)
- Operatingvoltage
- Drive method (electric or hydraulic)
- Do you need a small warping head?
- For double gypsy wheel anchor windlass, you need to know the center distance of the gypsy wheel

FAQs
What Is Windlass On A Boat?
The windlass uses a gypsy wheel fixed on the horizontal main shaft to drive the anchor chain. Usually, there are two gypsy wheels to drive the two anchor chains. The windlass is also used for line handling, so two warping heads at both ends are also provided.
What Are Technical Requirements of Windlass?
- The windlass should be driven by an independent prime mover or electric motor.
- When pulling an anchor from the water depth of 82.5m to the depth of 27.5m at an average speed of not less than 9m/min, the windlass shall have the ability to work continuously for 30min.
- The windlass should be able to work continuously for 2 minutes under the action of overload tension. The overload tension should not be less than 1.5 times the working load.
- The chain wheel of the windlass should be equipped with reliable brakes. After the brake is tightened, it should be able to bear the static tensile force of 45% of the breaking load of the anchor chain or the maximum static load on the anchor chain.
- The installation of the windlass should ensure that the anchor chain barrel, chain brake, and chain wheel are in line when the anchor chain is drawn out.
What Is The Purpose of Anchor Equipment?
The main functions of anchor equipment include:
- Anchoring
- Lie at anchor and brake
- Control the heading of the ship
- When the ship is out of control in strong winds and waves, use anchors or chains to drift and stagnate in order to gain more time to improve the situation.
- Use anchors to secure the hull of a stranded ship to make it re-float.
- When the craft is landing, the tail anchor is dropped in advanced, and after the landing is completed, the tail anchor is tightened to keep the ship off the beach.
What Type of Chain Is Used for Windlass?
According to the manufacturing method: cast steel anchor chain, welded anchor chain, and forged anchor chain.
According to the structure of the chain link: gear chain and gearless chain. The strength of a gear chain is about 20% greater than that of a gearless chain, which is widely used by seagoing ships.
According to the steel grade: AM1, AM2, and AM3, with strength AM1<AM2<AM3. AM1 is not suitable for high-holding power anchors, and AM3 is only suitable for anchor chains with a chain diameter of 20.5mm or more.
