Commonly Used Types of Winches on Ship
Ship Anchor Winch
The anchor winch is used to retract and release anchors and anchor chains. It is usually installed on the main deck of the fore and stern part of the ship, so that the ship is relatively fixed safely and reliably. When the ship is braked in an emergency, it can also help the ship to dock and leave the dock safely and quickly. The warping heads on both sides of the chain wheel can be used for line handling.
Mooring Winch

How to Choose The Right Ship Winch?
There are many factors to consider when choosing a winch for ship, especially the size of the ship, displacement, energy efficiency, etc.
Consider electric or hydraulic winches
The most commonly used winches are electric or hydraulic winches. Energy efficiency is very important when choosing winches for marine applications.
The electric winch uses electricity directly from the generator set. It has simple structure and easy operation.
Hydraulic winch uses fluid power to work, which utilizes a hydraulic system and a hydraulic motor pump between the generator set and the winch. However, due to this power conversion system, the performance of the hydraulic winch requires 20-30% of electricity. Hydraulic power winches are the perfect winches for ships with generator sets of a large enough crane load. The winches have the ability to carry very heavy loads.
Consider the size of the ship
For winches used on ships, the size of of the ship will help determine the type of winch. Due to the size of hydraulic system equipment, hydraulic winches are the best choice for large ships and are usually very heavy. For ships that need to move extremely heavy cargo, hydraulic winches are a better choice.
When choosing a hydraulic winch, you must consider the electrical system that controls the winch. The control of the winch includes a control panel display, joystick, switches and buttons. This can complicate the system for operating the winch. Therefore, it is important to choose a winch which can automate its cab controls, remote stations and local controllers and work the way they should.
You also should choose a hydraulic winch whose components can be easily replaced. The winch usually wears on the fluid and mechanical interfaces, as well as the rings and seals. You need to be able to get spare parts easily, because these parts need to be replaced regularly.
